Keto diet Side Effects

A ketogenic diet involves lowering carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This leads the body to a metabolic state called ketosis, which is efficient in burning fat and hence causes weight loss.
Remember, our body needs an adequate amount of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and nutrients to function properly. If an appropriate amount is not consumed, then our body would be distressed by several diseases e.g organ damage.

Keto diet is popular nowadays. But before following it, you should be mindful of its spinoffs for avoiding any adverse short or long term effects.

Hypoglycemia

The blood glucose level below normal signifies hypoglycemia.
Chills, Fatigue, Excessive thirst, and Frequent urination are some common symptoms. The condition may improve as the diet continues, and the body adapts new changes.

Blood composition

As alimentary habits change, the blood constitution also alters. In a few individuals, an increased amount of lipids and cholesterol are observed. 60% of patients reported elevated lipid, while 30% reported elevated cholesterol levels.
If any inimical effect is noted, then replace saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat. We can also lessen our fat ratio to protein and carbohydrates.

Keto flu

It’s our body’s normal reaction to less carbohydrate consumption as we switch our energy source from sugar to fat. The symptoms may appear after two to seven days of diet commencement.
Fatigue, Headache, Sleeping problems, and Constipation is a few observed signs.

Ketoacidosis

In diabetic patients, when too many ketones-acids are produced as a by-product, the acidity of blood increases and injures the liver, kidney, and brain.
It could be fatal if left untreated.
Type 1 and 2 diabetic patients need to follow the diet as prescribed by the doctor. Monitor your glucose level several times a day.

Kidney damage

Our body removes the glut of ketone bodies through urination. Excess and frequent urination leads to dehydration and electrolytes loss. Fatigue, nausea, and dizziness are a few symptoms.  Moreover, kidney stones and kidney injury might also occur.
Electrolyte deficiency could be life-threatening as it leads to irregular heartbeats.

Nutritional Concerns

Some grains, vegetables, fruits, and legumes are not part of a keto diet. They may contain nutrients, minerals, or chemicals that are crucial for our health. Lacking them in our diet may lead to bone mass loss or other chronic diseases.

Heart damage

A keto diet is about increasing  and enriching our fat intake. Not every fat is healthy. Ingesting a large number of saturated fats lead to atherosclerosis. It might hike up the risk of coronary heart disease.

Other consequences might be the production of sebum on the skin that may lead to acne. Since women do not consume enough carbs, irregular periods may occur due to the disturbance in leptin and luteinizing hormones.
Because of less protein consumption, hair loss may occur, and hair health is also affected.

Although the Keto diet assists a lot in losing weight, but consult a doctor or nutritionist before following it. So, to avoid any medical or psychological complications.
